{"id":8882,"date":"2010-05-23T18:21:18","date_gmt":"2010-05-23T22:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=8882"},"modified":"2010-05-23T18:21:18","modified_gmt":"2010-05-23T22:21:18","slug":"fate-of-freetown-hotel-tells-story-of-sierra-leone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=8882","title":{"rendered":"Fate of Freetown hotel tells story of Sierra Leone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In Sierra Leone&#8217;s capital, Freetown, a hotel made famous by author Graham Greene has come to symbolise a country caught in a cycle of conflict and decay. <\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0<em>(Photo:\u00c2\u00a0 Reduced to rubble, The City Hotel had a prestigious history)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was only a pile of rubble but it had a powerful effect on me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I was standing on the crummy corner where Gloucester and Lightfoot Boston streets meet, hoping not to be run down by swarming Okada motorbike taxis or pick-pocketed by street kids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The dry season heat of West Africa was at its most ferocious but the demolition site in front of me raised goosebumps on my arms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was where a famous hotel once stood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&#8216;Home from home&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just as Singapore had Raffles and Paris had the George V &#8211; hotels that, for an era at least, define a place &#8211; so Freetown had The City.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was one of the oldest in the former British colony and, thanks to Graham Greene, by far the best known.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_8885\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/City-Hoitel-1960s.jpg\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8885\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8885\" title=\"City Hoitel 1960s\" src=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/City-Hoitel-1960s.jpg\" alt=\"City Hotel in the 1960s\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" \/><\/strong><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">City Hotel in the 1960s<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Through Greene, the hotel became a literary leitmotif for the late colonial age, not just in Sierra Leone but across Britain&#8217;s declining empire.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His City Hotel was a forlorn place of ambitions run to waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As he put it: &#8220;A home from home for men who had not encountered success at any turn of the long road and who no longer expected it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Through Greene, the hotel became a literary leitmotif for the late colonial age, not just in Sierra Leone but across Britain&#8217;s declining empire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Hotel to brothel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I knew the establishment had fallen into disrepair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Italian-Swiss manager, Freddie Ferrari, had died back in 1993, aged 78 &#8211; Greene had known him when he was deployed to Freetown as a spy for MI6 (the UK&#8217;s Secret Intelligence Service) in World War II.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The place had gone downhill badly by the time I started going to Freetown as a journalist during Sierra Leone&#8217;s civil war.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_8883\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 236px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Freddie-Ferrari-hotel-owner.jpg\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8883\" title=\"Freddie Ferrari hotel owner\" src=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Freddie-Ferrari-hotel-owner.jpg\" alt=\"Freddie Ferrari\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" \/><\/strong><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><strong>Freddie Ferrari<\/strong><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Owner Freddie Ferrari died before the hotel went into decline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;It used to be one of the smartest hotels in the city,&#8221; Freddie&#8217;s grandson, Victor, told me on my last visit, rolling his &#8220;rs&#8221; with the gentlest of Krio lilts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He was born in 1978 and remembers the first-floor bar, where Freddie held court and which acted as his nursery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At home he still has a box of timeworn photographs showing various generations of drinkers at the bar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fashions changed &#8211; collars and ties in the early pictures, T-shirts and sunglasses in the later ones &#8211; but the drinkers looked as if they belonged in Grahame Greene-land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The sad truth is,&#8221; he said, &#8220;when my granddaddy died it stopped functioning as a real hotel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was a euphemism. The rooms began to be rented out not for the night, but for the hour. It became a brothel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;So, when fire struck in 2000 we did not really know how many people were in the place,&#8221; Victor continued.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;They say four people died but we could never be sure of the exact number.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_8886\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/47893151_bar_282.jpg\"><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8886\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8886\" title=\"_47893151_bar_282\" src=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/47893151_bar_282.jpg\" alt=\"City Hotel bar\" width=\"226\" height=\"282\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">City Hotel bar<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>The City Hotel bar enjoyed decades of popularity<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I had gone to Freetown with a photograph of Greene leaning on a stone balustrade at the bottom of the steps leading up to the bar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even after the fire, the facade was still intact and I hoped to get a souvenir snap of me in the same place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I was four days too late.
