Don\u2019t Punish campaign. The campaigncalls on governments to put an end to the expensive and counter-productive war on drugs. This war has failed to reduce drug use or supply, it costs in excess of $100 billion each year to enforce, it has led to the mass incarceration of the vulnerable and the poor, and it fuels human rights violations and HIV epidemics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 26th June is the United Nations\u2019 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking \u2013 a day which has traditionally been used by governments to \u2018celebrate\u2019 drug arrests, seizures and even executions. The Support. Don\u2019t Punish \u201cGlobal Day of Action\u201d aim to change the narrative, and to highlight the need for a better approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>This year, on June 26th, members of the West Africa Drug Policy Network and other partners \u2013 in collaboration with the International Drug Policy Consortium, the West Africa Commission on Drugs, and the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) \u2013 are organizing public events in 11 countries to generate awareness and promote the <\/strong><strong>Support. Don\u2019t Punish <\/strong><strong>campaign:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Benin, Cotonou\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 Conference session\/Public gathering<\/li>\n<li>Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou\u00a0 &#8211; Street demonstration with placards<\/li>\n<li>Gambia, Banjul &#8211; Public symposium<\/li>\n<li>Ghana, Accra &#8211; Stake holders Dialogue series<\/li>\n<li>Ivory Coast, Abidjan\u00a0 &#8211; Soccer tournament\/outreach programmes \u00a0 and stakeholders meeting<\/li>\n<li>Liberia, Monrovia\u00a0 &#8211; Stakeholders dialogue series<\/li>\n<li>Mali, Bamako &#8211; Public conference\/Debate<\/li>\n<li>Niger, Niamey\u00a0 &#8211; Public conference\/Debate<\/li>\n<li>Nigeria, Abuja &#8211; Media event<\/li>\n<li>Senegal, Dakar\u00a0 &#8211; Float Parade<\/li>\n<li>Sierra Leone, Freetown &#8211; Radio talk show\/Float Parade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0In April 2016, governments will come together in New York for a major drugs summit \u2013 the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs. This is a rare opportunity for high-level, open debate about the world drug problem, and what is (and what is not) working.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the build-up to this summit, the \u201cGlobal Day of Action\u201d is a public show of force for better drug policies. A series of high-profile photo and video opportunities, meetings and seminars, concerts and publicity stunts will take place simultaneously around the world.
