{"id":72601,"date":"2015-01-22T03:38:49","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T03:38:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=72601"},"modified":"2015-01-22T03:38:49","modified_gmt":"2015-01-22T03:38:49","slug":"african-americans-have-it-good-compared-to-africans-%c2%ad-akon-tells-al-jazeera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=72601","title":{"rendered":"African-Americans &#8220;have it good,&#8221; compared to Africans -\u00ad Akon tells Al Jazeera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this Saturday\u2019s episode of\u00a0<em>Talk To Al Jazeera<\/em>, five-time Grammy nominee Akon tells Folly Bah Thibault that African-Americans should acknowledge \u201cthe rights\u2026 and the blessing they do, you know, have actual access to.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\n<h3 id=\"akon-asks-why-dissatisfied-afr\" ><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Akon asks why dissatisfied African-Americans don\u2019t &#8220;just go back home\u2026 back to Africa&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3 id=\"says-a-housing-project-in-new-\" ><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Says a housing project in New York would be \u201ca five-star hotel\u201d compared to his upbringing in Senegal<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3 id=\"says-african-americans-fear-vi\" ><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Says African-Americans fear visiting Africa and would \u2018be crying to come back to America\u2019 if they went<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last year, the killings of Eric Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Ferguson led to protests against police brutality targeting African-Americans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When asked if he sympathized with the protesters, Akon said he could understand their frustration as \u201cthe\u00a0system in America was never built for black people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Akon added, \u201cI don&#8217;t want to speak too much for them, because I think I might have some knowledge they might not quite have, because I&#8217;m in the position where I have experienced Africa and I&#8217;ve experienced the United States. I always felt like Africa was for Africans.\u00a0So when I see African-Americans in America dealing with all these issues, my first question is: &#8216;Why don&#8217;t they just go back home\u2026 Back to Africa.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Born in America but partly raised in Senegal, Akon tells Folly, \u201cIn Africa, the way I grew up, let&#8217;s just pick\u00a0a [housing] project in New York, for instance: that&#8217;s a five-star hotel compared to the environment I came up in\u2026 They actually get money from the government, there actually are programs that help the impoverished and the poor, and you get food stamps. I mean, they have it good, compared to Africa, you follow\u2026\u00a0If these groups were to be taken from the environment where they are now to the same \u2018equal\u2019 environment in Africa, they would be crying to come back to America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He says African-Americans should put their challenges in perspective by visiting Africa as tourists. \u201cHow many African-Americans do you know actually consider Africa as a vacation spot?&#8230; Even, just for knowledge, just to know where they came from, just to get an idea of what that is. There is so much fear instilled in them that they wouldn&#8217;t even want to go there to visit.
