{"id":70472,"date":"2014-09-21T00:34:23","date_gmt":"2014-09-21T00:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=70472"},"modified":"2014-09-21T00:34:23","modified_gmt":"2014-09-21T00:34:23","slug":"president-ernest-koroma-to-skip-un-general-assembly-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=70472","title":{"rendered":"President Ernest Koroma to Skip UN General Assembly Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sierra Leonean President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma will skip the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next week when it convened its Sixty-Ninth Session in New York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The president will again forgo a vital world summit due to the Ebola disease outbreak which the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says Sierra Leone has a total of 1673 total case count, 1513 laboratory confirmed cases and 562 deaths as of September 18, 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement issued via email by National Publicity &amp; Outreach Coordinator in the Office of Government Spokesperson, Abdulai Bayraytay said it is improbable that President Koroma will attend the UNGA General Debate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe honourable minister of information and communications Alpha Kanu has just informed me that it is highly likely that President Koroma may not attend this year&#8217;s UN General Assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The announcement came four days earlier before a three-day lockdown began Friday to enable health workers to curb the spread of Ebola.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On July 31, President Koroma declared a state of public emergency in response to the Ebola epidemic outbreak where he announced the \u201cCancellation of all foreign trips by ministers and other government officials except absolutely essential engagements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, this declaration will not apply to the Sierra Leonean delegation attending the 69<sup>th<\/sup> UNGA General Debate next week in New York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Mr. Bayraytay \u201cthe travel restrictions for ministers will continue to be in place.
