24 August 2014 – WHO is working to ensure an\u00a0international\u00a0health worker who\u00a0is\u00a0deployed for the Organization\u00a0in\u00a0Sierra Leone and has contracted Ebola\u00a0receives the best care possible\u00a0including\u00a0the option of medical evacuation\u00a0to another care facility if necessary.<\/p>\n
International health workers are an important part of this Ebola response. \u00a0Even before the Ebola outbreak began, after years of conflict,\u00a0the area of West Africa most affected by this disease suffered from a weakened and fragile health system with a shortage of health workers. Surge capacity of international health experts is essential to supplement the work of the local frontline workers in this response.<\/p>\n
Since the beginning of the\u00a0international\u00a0response to the\u00a0outbreak in March, WHO has deployed nearly 400 people from\u00a0across the Organization and from partners in the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN)\u00a0to help respond to the disease in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. \u00a0This is the first time someone working\u00a0under the aegis\u00a0of\u00a0WHO has fallen ill with the disease.<\/p>\n
The Ebola virus is spread through contact with bodily fluids and people giving care or working around infected patients are known to be a high risk group. In the past six months of the outbreak, more than 225 health workers have fallen ill and nearly 130 have lost their\u00a0lives to the disease they were working to contain.<\/p>\n
WHO\u00a0recognizes there is a risk for health workers who work around Ebola and takes many precautions\u00a0before they deploy to help them\u00a0protect themselves in the field. Once there, the Organization ensures those workers\u00a0have access to appropriate medical advice and support.<\/p>\n
