{"id":66028,"date":"2014-03-17T13:08:47","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T13:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=66028"},"modified":"2014-03-17T13:08:47","modified_gmt":"2014-03-17T13:08:47","slug":"gambia-to-stop-using-english-language-very-soon-says-president-yayah-jammeh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=66028","title":{"rendered":"Gambia to stop using English language very soon says: President Yayah Jammeh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking recently at State House in The Gambian capital &#8211; Banjul, President Yayah Jammeh referred to the English language as being a colonial legacy. \u00a0(Photo: <i>Yayah Jammeh and Ralph Sawyer)<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Gambian President, commonly known as \u201cPapa don\u2019t take no mess\u201d the use of the English language\u00a0 in The Gambia as being a colonial legacy will very soon change to using a local language. He said English as the country\u2019s official language is the language used in government and the Civil Service; for debate in the National Assembly Chambers; and in the courts; in business and it is the medium of instructions in public schools in The Gambia, as well as Institutions of higher learning such as the University of The Gambia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the occasion of the swearing in of Justice Ali Nawaz Chowhan, a Pakistani national, as the new Chief &#8211; Justice of The Gambia. President Jammeh among other things said that such is the worst story of colonialism . \u201cWhat brought the British in the first place to The Gambia which was bigger than it is now was the trade in ivory &#8211; due to the fact the country had a lot of elephants,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He went on to say, the Gambia by then had an island called Elephant Island and that it was the ivory that attracted the British. \u201cThey ended up wiping out the elephants and then turned around and started selling Africans,\u201d\u00a0 he said.\u00a0 He added that the British instituted slavery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo now even for the next billion years, the British have no moral platform to talk about human rights anywhere in the world; more so to talk about good governance,\u201d Jammeh continued. He cited what he called the \u201ctrack record\u201d of the British colonial government. \u201cAll the British government did was loot, and loot, and loot\u201d he said. The Gambian Big Boss went on to openly accuse the British government: saying that there is a museum in BIRMINGHAM \u201cwith artifacts stolen from The Gambia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Jammeh questioned their honesty of being a teacher or an example of good governance.\u00a0 \u201cLet them send back to us what they have stolen for 400 years\u201d he demanded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A,ccording to Mr. President (Papa don\u2019t\u00a0 take no mess) \u201cthe only thing the British left behind is unfortunately , the English language which we are going to change very soon to a local language\u00a0 because we no longer believe that for you to be a government we should speak a foreign language.
