{"id":63021,"date":"2013-11-15T14:18:41","date_gmt":"2013-11-15T14:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=63021"},"modified":"2013-11-15T14:18:41","modified_gmt":"2013-11-15T14:18:41","slug":"redi-tlhabi-discusses-conflict-diamonds-on-south2north","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=63021","title":{"rendered":"Redi Tlhabi discusses conflict diamonds on South2North"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This Friday on Al Jazeera\u2019s talk show\u00a0<i>South2North<\/i>, author and media personality Redi Tlhabi (in photo) discusses conflict diamonds in Africa with journalist Rafael Marques de Morais, author of <i>Blood Diamonds: Torture and Corruption in Angola<\/i>;\u00a0 Dr Oladiran Bello, a specialist in African<b> <\/b>resource management at the South African Institute of International Relations; and Farai Maguwu, director of the Center for Applied Research in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c\u2019A diamond is forever\u2019 claims the marketing \u2013 and yes, this precious stone has come to signify eternal, sparkling romance,\u201d says Redi at the start of the show, which is broadcast from Johannesburg, South Africa. \u201cBut diamonds also have a very dark side \u2013 as a commodity that warlords and dictators exchange for weapons fuelling civil wars and resulting in human rights abuses. So to what extent is today\u2019s mainstream diamond industry free of \u2018conflict diamonds\u2019 and, if you happen to have a diamond glittering on your finger, might it have a blood-stained past?\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_63022\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Dr-Oladiran-Bello.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63022\" class=\"size-full wp-image-63022\" alt=\"Dr Oladiran Bello\" src=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Dr-Oladiran-Bello.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-63022\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Oladiran Bello<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rafael explains that the definition of conflict diamonds under The Kimberley Process is too narrow. Oladiran agrees. \u201cThis is the question The Kimberley Process needs to address going forward. It\u2019s fairly clear to everyone that it\u2019s not just rebels who are capable of handling conflict gems as it were\u2026 Across Africa you\u2019ve seen situations where governments are culpable in massive violations of human rights in areas where diamonds are produced.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_63024\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Rafael-Marques-de-Morais.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63024\" class=\"size-full wp-image-63024\" alt=\"Rafael Marques de Morais\" src=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Rafael-Marques-de-Morais.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-63024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rafael Marques de Morais<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rafael has investigated how the diamond industry became more violent after the civil war in Angola, as those in power used war tactics to ensure that the revenue from the diamond industry remained in their pockets. He believes The Kimberley Process is a cover used by governments to hide corruption in the diamond trade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe process of buying diamonds was centralised in such a way and legitimised by The Kimberley Process and The United Nations, that the president\u2019s daughter took 25% of that business enterprise, and that\u2019s what\u2019s wrong with the diamond industry in Angola,\u201d says Rafael.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oladiran says conflict diamonds are not a uniquely African problem. \u201cThe African context is the one that\u2019s often talked about,\u201d he says, pointing to the world\u2019s awareness of Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Democratic Republic of Congo in particular. \u201cBut make no mistake, it is not a uniquely African problem. We\u2019ve seen situations like Venezuela, a country that has for a long time freely absented itself from the Kimberley Certification Process. There are still questions being asked today about where diamonds mined in Venezuela go.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_63023\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Farai-Maguwu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63023\" class=\"size-full wp-image-63023\" alt=\"Farai Maguwu\" src=\"http:\/\/sem.lamtech.sl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Farai-Maguwu.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-63023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Farai Maguwu<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Redi asks Farai why one of the founding partners of The Kimberley Process, Global Witness, withdrew its support after diamonds from Zimbabwe were declared \u201cconflict free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen The Kimberley Process declared Zimbabwe\u2019s diamonds as \u2018conflict-free,\u2019 it appeared there were a lot of issues that were ignored that civil society is passionate about, especially the issues of human rights.
