The buyers and market women of Congo Market in the Brookfield\u2019s community have called on the Government and the Freetown City Council (FCC) to clean the market due the filth engulfing the market which is due to poor sanitation, coupled with garbage all over the place, and blocked drains that now serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies.<\/p>\n
Congo Market serves the whole of the Brookfield community, including Campbell Street, St. John and the prison barracks. \u00a0Garbage has now overtaken the area.<\/p>\n
This reporter caught up with Fodie Samura who sells at the market. \u00a0She said \u201cwe are not happy with the amount of garbage in the market because it is not good for our health, as you can see the place is filthy, the gutters are always blocked with all kind of rubbish,\u201d she end.<\/p>\n
Chief Ya Alimamy who spoke to this reporter said that the market has no problem with sanitation, adding that they are working with the FCC and youths to clean the market and the market women contributing small amounts to clean the said place.<\/p>\n
Mrs. During a housewife that visits the market daily for shopping stated, \u201cI have never witnessed any cleaning or seen this market clean, the place is always flooded with water all over the place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Contacting the FCC, they confirmed that the problem is a continuous one but that the city is working hard to keep Congo Market clean.<\/p>\n
