Lunsar- (10 October 2013) \u2013 <\/i>In a united effort to tackle youth unemployment, London Mining in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Youth Commission (NAYCOM) yesterday conducted a safety and corporate induction programme for the second group of 33 university graduate interns at its mine-site in Lunsar, Marampa Chiefdom. The first group of 37 Interns were offered similar opportunity by the company in August 2012.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s 4-months Graduate Internship Partnership (GIP) engaged skilled graduates from tertiary institutions across the country. Graduates from the company\u2019s concession communities who met the requirements were favourably considered for the programme.<\/p>\n

In a statement at the welcome ceremony, London Mining\u2019s Human Resource Manager, Mr. Denis Donkin, said the primary purpose of the GIP is to give the participants their first employment opportunity by contributing to London Mining\u2019s activities. \u201cInterns will be challenged to broaden their skill-base, gain practical and relevant work experience in order to develop professionally and personally. Ultimately, it gives each Intern the opportunity to take responsibility for their own development and demonstrate a commitment to continuous development through active and proactive participation in the process,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The graduates with backgrounds in engineering, geology, accounting, law, information technology, environmental sciences and administration will receive a wide-range of experiences that will meet both Intern\u2019s career aspirations and the company\u2019s needs. To ensure value-added development, most Interns will be assigned a special project to address a specific issue within their department. At the end the programme, each Intern will be expected to make a presentation of their key learning and recommendations to London Mining senior management team.<\/p>\n

In her remarks, one of the graduate Interns from Fourah Bay College, Ms. Aisha Nkaima Sesay, thanked London Mining, UNDP and NAYCOM for providing a career opportunity for them. \u201cWe are happy with the 4 months long with London Mining and we would do our best to measure up to expectation,\u201d she pledged.<\/p>\n

London Mining, UNDP, NAYCOM and Restless Development in August 2012 signed the first Memorandum of Understanding to engage 37 university graduates for an initial 3 months internship at London Mining. The company retained 13 Interns as trainees and 3 in full time employment.<\/p>\n
