An international nongovernmental organization BRAC-SL and the Kenema District Health management team recently completed a sensitization program to educate the community on the causes and prevention of malaria on the theme\u00a0 \u201cInvest in the Future, Defeat Malaria\u201d at the Kenema District Council Hall<\/p>\n
Speaking to this press the Regional Health Coordinator for BRAC-Eastern Region, Protiva Rani Sarker, said the sensitization program is headed every year to raise awareness on the dangers and prevention of the diseases among residents in the city and the region as a whole<\/p>\n
Portiva Rani Sarker said her organization over the years has joined other organizations including Global Fund, Catholic Relief Service, and the government of Sierra Leone to sensitize communities on the prevention of malaria and other diseases. She said Malaria is one of the highest killer diseases in sub Sahara Africa and it is the business of everybody to join the campaign against malaria<\/p>\n
The regional coordinator told this press that some of key messages sent out to the people is that everybody should sleep under mosquito bed nets and also keep their environments clean, and to seek immediate care and treatment when contacted with the disease.<\/p>\n
Portiva Rani Sarker concluded by saying that the sensitization started with a street rally which brought together pupils from various schools and health clubs who precipitated in a quiz competition, and a malaria discussion on prevention of the disease.<\/p>\n
The district medical officer Dr. Victor Lebby said malaria is an endemic disease found everywhere in Africa and was referred to as the \u201cwhite man\u2019s grave\u201d during the colonial period. He said that the best form of cure for malaria is prevention.<\/p>\n
He informed the public that treatment for malaria is free at all Government Health Institutions. Doctor Lebby said the purpose come on board and fight against the world\u2019s highest killer disease. \u00a0He described the youths as change agents in our community who will also go out and sanitize others about the dangers of malaria and how to prevent it.<\/p>\n
