Celebration and congratulations were the order of the day at the Sierra Rutile sponsored Jackson and Devon Anderson Technical Institute (JADA), as the first cohort of student to study for the Certificate in Business Studies at the Institute received their results. \u00a0Out of the 34 students who took the exams, 29 have been successful, with four achieving a credit.<\/p>\n
Fatmata Rashid, one of the four to pass with a credit, said: “I am really excited and happy about the result. I am thankful to my lecturers and the administration for their support and motivation. The JADA Institute has enhanced my employment potential. I want to take this opportunity to encourage young women in the mining communities to enroll in JADA for skills training.\u00a0 JADA is here to equip us with employable skills. \u00a0If I can do it so can you.”<\/p>\n
Hasiru Tatel Jalloh, another of the four, said: “I am very happy with this result. I now have a sound certificate in Business Studies, a credit, which is enough to show my commitment and competence in handling matters relating to office procedure and basic accounting. I want to pay tribute to the outstanding commitment of the lecturers in seeing us through our course and to encourage them to continue the good work.”<\/p>\n
The JADA Institute – a joint venture between Sierra Rutile and US NGO, Africare, first opened its doors to students in 2010. \u00a0Based in the Bonthe District of Sierra Leone, in Sierra Rutile\u2019s area of operations, it is intended to support and promote technical and vocational education in the country and fill a much needed skills-gap in the mining industry. It takes about 300 students and offers courses in business studies and computing as well as civil, auto-mobile, mechanical and electrical and electronic engineering.<\/p>\n
JADA\u2019s Principle, Mr Tamba P. Joe, is delighted with the results: \u00a0\u201cEveryone at the Jackson and Devon Technical Institute is very proud of the success of our students. They have been an outstanding first cohort. They have studied hard and their determination to do well has clearly paid off. \u00a0In today\u2019s competitive environment, individuals with good qualifications continue to have an edge in the employment market.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Joe, who has over 30 years of experience as an educationalist, added: \u201cThe achievements of our inaugural cohort are also a testament to the dedication of the lecturers here at JADA, and an important indication of the high quality of education offered. \u00a0The Institute has got off to a great start and we look forward to building on these results in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Certificate in Business Studies and other exams taken at the Institute are validated and certified by the National Council for Technical, Vocational and other Academic Awards, and the exams are independently invigilated and marked.<\/p>\n
Mr John Sisay, CEO of Sierra Rutile, congratulated the students saying: \u201cIt has taken hard work and sacrifice for these students to achieve their success, but the rewards are improved prospects and a future which offers more choice and opportunity. \u00a0Skilled and educated young people are essential for the future of Sierra Leone\u2019s economy. \u00a0It is estimated that 800,000 young people are either unemployed or underemployed, and over 50% of our population in this age group is illiterate.\u00a0 If\u00a0 our economy is to fulfil its potential, these issues must be tackled. \u00a0The Jackson and Devon Anderson Technical Institute equips young people with the skills and education to meet the demands of the labour market, particularly in the growth industries of construction and mining. \u00a0I am delighted that our first cohort of students has seized the opportunity they have been offered and delivered such commendable results.\u201d<\/p>\n
