Market women at Guard Street market stormed the Freetown City Council (FCC) in protest against their Councilor, Abu Yankra whom they accused of persistently subjecting traders to harassment, embarrassment, and also allegedly the Councilor is involved in corrupt practices at the Guard Street market.<\/p>\n
The aggrieved traders carrying banners, some of which read \u2018Councilor Abu Yankra must go, \u2018He is a thief,\u2019 \u2018Change Yankra now,\u2019 etc.<\/p>\n
Speaking on behalf of the disgruntled traders Madam Marie Bangura said \u2018Councilor Yankra is not working in the interest of the people, especially we the traders who are paying daily market dues. The councilor has set up his office that is manned by his cohorts to collect extra market dues from the traders and we are being harassed to pay every day.\u2019<\/p>\n
Mrs. Bangura who has been a trader at Guard Street market for decades said monies collected by Yankra\u2019s boys are purportedly meant for the cleaning of the market and because of this they see no reason to pay their daily market dues to the City Council.<\/p>\n
She revealed that \u201cwe have held several meetings with him on how best the problem can be resolved but to no avail and he goes on suppressing traders;\u201d she further revealed that more frustrating is that the Councilor and his team on occasions seize their wares and sometimes take them to the Eastern Police Station and order their detention.<\/p>\n
The agitating traders however waited outside the FCC building with their placards to see Mayor Franklyn Sam Bode Gibson. \u00a0An official of the Council told them that the mayor was not around but assured them that he will properly informed him about their grievances.<\/p>\n
Councilor Yankra could not be found for his response to these surmounting allegations as at press time.<\/p>\n
