The Executive Director and National Coordinator cum Second-in-Command of the Attitudinal and Behavioural Change (ABC) Secretariat, Dr. Ivan Ajibola Thomas and Madam Nanette Thomas respectively visited the forces in the western rural district on Wednesday 30th<\/sup> January 2013, as part of the Secretariat\u2019s month long post-elections campaign.\u00a0 (Photo; Executive Director lecturing the soldiers on the importance of democracy and the constitution<\/i>)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Personnel of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) force and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) were sensitized on two separate occasions held at the Waterloo Police Division and the Benguema Military Camp.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Ivan Ajibola Thomas disclosed that Sierra Leone is transforming itself at an unprecedented speed. \u201cThe country is rapidly and positively changing socially, politically and economically,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He expressed happiness over the fact that the country has graduated from the state where its citizens had given it up.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He said any country with lawless citizens cannot boast of democracy, as according to him, democracy goes with law and order.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He advised the forces to always endeavor to uphold the national constitution, as he puts it, the law reigns supreme.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He argued that we don\u2019t need new laws in Sierra Leone, noting that what we need is thorough implementation of existing laws.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Rights of citizens, he said, go with responsibilities. He advised the forces to always have the moral courage to face and overcome their challenges. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He said Sierra Leone, as a country, has decided to move forward. He therefore advised to citizens to follow the trend of development. \u201cIf you resist change, change will change you,\u201d he emphasized. He said the best way to enjoy life is to be disciplined.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While advising the personnel to make sure they educate themselves, he pointed out that a truly educated man is a selfless person. The sovereignty of the state, he said, belongs to the people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He urged the officers to seriously pay attention to their trainings, and judiciously utilize their knowledge. He urged them all to be proud to be Sierra Leoneans. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Madam Nanette Thomas reminded the officers that every Sierra Leonean has the same rights.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ignorance of the law, she said, is no excuse. She encouraged all to make a commitment to embrace the agenda for prosperity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To the police officers, she advised them to put up acts that befit members of a \u2018force for good\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She advised the female officers never to settle for less, as according to her, women can do whatever a man does. \u201cWomen should not only believe in themselves but should also apply themselves accordingly,\u201d she noted.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She urged them to always respect time and do their jobs to the best of their knowledge and ability.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She further advised them to always stay together as a family. According to her, violence, corruption and poverty are major threats to good governance, because they undermine transparency, security, freedom and participation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She called on them to have the moral courage to say and do what is right irrespective of the consequences. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To the soldiers, she described the military as a disciplined institution. \u201cDemocracy, good governance and citizenship are inseparable,\u201d she pointed out, noting that capacity to deliver, accountability and transparency are among the pillars of good governance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
