{"id":51150,"date":"2012-12-12T03:39:32","date_gmt":"2012-12-12T03:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=51150"},"modified":"2012-12-12T03:39:32","modified_gmt":"2012-12-12T03:39:32","slug":"energy-access-is-critical-to-meeting-millennium-development-goals-says-unido-representative-to-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=51150","title":{"rendered":"\u201cEnergy Access is critical to meeting Millennium Development Goals,\u201d says UNIDO Representative to UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At a high\u2013level conference held at Philadelphia\u2019s National Constitution Center, in the historic section of the \u201cCity of Brotherly Love,\u201d international energy experts and key actors working on sustainable energy in the United States of America affirmed the importance of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon\u2019s Sustainable Energy for All initiative (SE4ALL). \u00a0<em>(Photo:l-r\u00a0UNIDO Director UN Representative George Assaf , Jennifer Hopkins President of Sustainable Energy Fund (SEF))<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Organized by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Sustainable Energy Fund (SEF), the symposium brought together UN representatives, the US State Department, development partners, the private sector, academia, civil society and state and local government officials in an effort to find practical solutions to the \u201cChallenges of Implementing Sustainable Energy for All at the Global and Local Levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr. Ban\u2019s landmark initiative seeks to confront the problems associated with energy poverty by meeting three ambitious yet achievable objectives of supporting the \u201cgreen energy\u201d revolution to ensure universal access to modern energy, doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewables, all by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Noting that the \u201cenergy revolution\u201d can in fact revitalize the global economy and help combat climate change, Mr. Ban has always reiterated his belief that \u201cenergy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, increases social equity and provides for an environment that allows the world to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51152\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Dr.-George-Assaf-and-panelists.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51152\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51152\" title=\"Dr. George Assaf and panelists\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Dr.-George-Assaf-and-panelists.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-51152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. George Assaf and panelists<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">George Assaf, UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Director and Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations noted that the UN recognizes energy because \u201cit is critical to the achievement of internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Without energy, achieving inclusive growth and sustainable development, environmental protection, political stability and gender equity would be increasingly difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Energy experts confirmed that while the benefits associated with energy access are in great demand in developing nations, especially those in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, it is also true that the richer nations like the United States should learn valuable lessons from the recent Hurricane Sandy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is a matter of national security and global stability. It\u2019s at the heart of the global economy. It\u2019s also an issue of democracy and human rights,\u201d said Robert Ichord, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of Bureau of Energy Resources as he referred the audience to Secretary Clinton\u2019s \u201cEnergy Diplomacy in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century\u201d delivered at Georgetown University two weeks before Hurricane Sandy made landfall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The after effects of Hurricane Sandy, which left about 60 million people in the dark, with no access to electricity, is a reminder of the horrible lives that 1.3 billion people (men, women, and children) around the world live each and every day, including approximately 3 billion who rely on traditional energy sources such as wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heating purposes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis hurricane showed the vulnerability of humans to natural disaster, even in the richest country in the world. It has also led to deep reflections on our preparedness against the effects of climate change in terms of adequacy of basic infrastructure, including transportation, water supply, and supporting urban planning.
