London Mining on 4 September sponsored eight host mining community stakeholders to attend a week-long community development agreement study tour in Ghana.<\/p>\n
In an historic move, London Mining is the first company to commission the educational tour that will draw on best practice and expertise in community investment and resettlement undertaken in Ghana by the hydro-power project, Bui Power Authority and the product group, Rio Tinto Alcan.<\/p>\n
According to London Mining\u2019s Community Relations and Resettlement Manager, Desmond Doherty, the tour will focus on social infrastructure in the areas of education, health, water, sanitation and alternative livelihoods including agriculture, small business financing and skills development.<\/p>\n
\u201cLondon Mining is the first company taking this step to develop and negotiate the terms of a community development agreement with host communities since the Sierra Leone Mines and Minerals Act of 2009 was signed into law,\u201d Desmond said. \u201cWe are delighted to be sponsoring such a prestigious event,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The representative of the paramount chief of Marampa, Chief Kapra Muntha, expressed gratitude to the company for the sponsorship and the opportunity to interact with mining communities in Ghana. \u201cIt is a great exposure of my people to the processes and procedure in negotiating, designing and implementing a community development agreement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The team which is led by London Mining\u2019s Deputy Community Relations Manager, Saticon Conteh, includes Frank Kargbo, youths chairman of Marampa Chiefdom; Housman Kanu, community elder; Madam Ya Bokapr Sankoh, women\u2019s leader; Joseph Komeh, development officer; Chief Kapr Muntha; Michael M. Kamara, secretary-general of landowners association; Mohamed Kamara, Maforki Chiefdom youth leader and Issa Kanu, Thofayim village elder.<\/p>\n
