{"id":43961,"date":"2012-07-06T16:30:28","date_gmt":"2012-07-06T16:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=43961"},"modified":"2012-07-06T16:30:28","modified_gmt":"2012-07-06T16:30:28","slug":"airtel-begins-the-search-for-rising-football-stars-in-sierra-leone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=43961","title":{"rendered":"Airtel begins the search for rising football stars in Sierra Leone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The search for football talent in Sierra Leone has begun following the commencement of the 2nd Airtel Rising Stars Under-17 tournament in the Western Area region where Freetown is located on Thursday.\u00a0 (<em>Spectators turned out in large numbers to witness the opening games of ARS 2012<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>This came seven weeks after former Manchester United star striker Dwight York launched this season\u2019s youth event on behalf of the English club in a well attended colourful ceremony in Freetown.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament was organised by Airtel Sierra Leone in partnership with Manchester United with local group Medium Hypes serving as the implementing agency.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is for both boys and girls and will take place in five regions across the country (Freetown, Kono, Bo, Kenema and Makeni) for a period of one month in a knock out basis, with Wusum field in Makeni hosting the nationals.\u00a0 About 100 teams in both categories country wide will compete in the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of spectators turned out to witness the opening matches in a wet day at the Brima Atouga mini stadium in Freetown painted with Airtel red and white striking colours.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve boys\u2019 teams and six girls\u2019 sides were paired up and already two teams have been shown the exit door in day one of the competition.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43963\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Flex-FC-goal-Keeper-was-sent-the-wrong-way-as-he-watches-the-winning-penalty-entring-the-net.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43963\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43963\" title=\"Flex FC goal Keeper was sent the wrong way as he watches the winning penalty entring the net\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Flex-FC-goal-Keeper-was-sent-the-wrong-way-as-he-watches-the-winning-penalty-entring-the-net.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flex FC goal keeper was sent the wrong way as he watches the winning penalty entering the net<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><\/em>In the opening fixture in the male category, Sunderland FC defeated Flex FC 4-2 on penalties after goalless draw in full time to advance to the next stage of the competition. Thanks to Sunderland impressive goal keeper Mohamed Sawanneh who saved two penalties.
