28 Doctors take Oath at College of Medicine<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A total of twenty-eight medical doctors were, on Saturday December 5th<\/sup> 2009, sworn in at a ceremony held at the Campus of College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences at Kossoh Town. The twenty-eight, which is the largest number to have ever graduated at a time joined granduants from other colleges to a convocation ceremony held on the 12th<\/sup> December, 2009 at Fourah Bay College.<\/p>\n

Foreign Affairs Minister receives Warm Welcome<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ms. Zainab Hawa Bangura, was on Monday December 7th<\/sup> 2009 warmly greeted by her staff following her return from this year’s pilgrimage to the holy land of Mecca. The ministry’s acting Director General Mrs. Khadijatu Bassir said her colleagues are delighted to welcome the minister because of her dedicated and hardworking nature.<\/p>\n

Handicap International Empowers Disabled People in Bo<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Handicap International, an international non government organization, has funded and conducted a ten day training workshop for the Disable People Organization (DPO’s) at the Methodist Youth Resource Centre (MYRC) in Bo. The DPO’s were trained in basic administrative and financial skills, formation and cohesion of group’s advocacy, lobbying and the well being of DPO’s.<\/p>\n

Bauxite Company to leave Salone<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A bauxite company in Sierra Leone, Moidu Mines Shanky Resources, has revealed their intention to leave the country after the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources reportedly granted licenses to another bauxite company to mine in its area of operation. The license was reported to have been granted to the new company at as time when the license of the old company was yet to expire.<\/p>\n

Women Protest for their Political Rights<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dozens of Sierra Leonean and foreign women, all dressed in black on Tuesday 8th<\/sup> December 2009, protested along Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown against the male “Poro Society’s” discrimination against women in the paramount chieftaincy election of Nimiyama Chiefdom in the Kono District.\u00c2\u00a0 The protesters said women too must be given equal political right in paramount chieftaincy.<\/p>\n

Human Rights report Endorsed in Parliament<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The House of Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone on Monday 7th<\/sup> December 2009 approved the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) State of Human Rights Report 2008. The report entails issues bordering on the human rights status in the country.<\/p>\n

$ 2.5M to Build ECOWAS L I Base at Lungi<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The commissioner for political affairs, peace and security in ECOWAS Col, Mamane Toure said on Wednesday at the 26th<\/sup> meeting of the committee of ECOWAS has prepared a budget $2.5M to build an ECOWAS logistic installation base at Lungi.<\/p>\n

45% Salone Budget Wasted<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The chief executive officer of the National Public Procurement Authority (NPPA), Mr. Alfred H. Kandeh, is reported in saying that forty five percent of the country’s budget is wasted through corruption and its related practices. He added that over eighty percent of the nation’s budget goes to procurement, stressing however that about half of that percentage is wasted through corrupt means.<\/p>\n

The Anti-Corruption Commission joined other countries to commemorate international anti-corruption day on Wednesday 9th<\/sup> December 2009, wherein in Sierra Leone, the Anti-Corruption Commission organized a national integrity award, to praise the most corrupt individuals in the country.<\/p>\n
