One of Sierra Leone\u2019s female politicians, Afsatu Kabba, Thursday 8th planted a tree signifying women\u2019s empowerment and inspiration in observation of International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n
The ceremony held at the frontage of the Miata Conference Hall, Youyi Building, Freetown, saw hundreds of women sharing common ideologies on the rights of women.<\/p>\n
The International Women\u2019s Day celebration, according to Afsatu Kabba, reflects how women have suffered marginalization, abuse, and uneven distribution of the world\u2019s cake.<\/p>\n
It is against this that women all over the world carry the theme: \u201cempowering girls and women for an inspiring future,\u201d in this year\u2019s celebration.<\/p>\n
\u201cNationally,\u201d Afsatu maintained, \u201cInternational Women\u2019s Day in Sierra Leone is looked at on two fronts: \u2018the planting of women\u2019s empowerment trees and a luncheon sale respectively.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs UNFPA goodwill Ambassador,\u201d she continued, \u201cI was asked to plant the organization\u2019s women empowerment tree, which I humbly did.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the tree planting ceremony ended, and soon after the commencement of the \u2018luncheon sale\u2019 service nevertheless, Afsatu, who served as \u2018grand opener\u2019 during the ceremony, was invited to uncover tables of the police, prison, FOM WASAL, etc.<\/p>\n
Other respective female organizations including Bambara Town Women\u2019s, National Council of Muslim Women, Amnesty International Women\u2019s group, the Police, Military and Prison on the whole were represented.<\/p>\n
In his measurement as he granted a press interview, the Director of Amnesty International Brima A. Sheriff said, \u201cbeing the head of a human rights organization, my subordinates and I have resolved refraining from talking, but rather taking action this time around\u2026 we intend to see a society that is empowered educationally. \u00a0As for our views internationally, it is, but urging that women\u2019s rights in countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) be given them.\u201d<\/p>\n
The police, military and prisons were observed wearing mufflers with the inscription \u201cInternational Women\u2019s Day, Stop Violence against Girls and Women.\u201d<\/p>\n
It is a fact, however, that Sierra Leonean women have long asked that government equitably give them 30% quota in politics as well as public offices.<\/p>\n
