The Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity in collaboration with the National farmer\u2019s Cooperative Union of Sierra Leone (NAFCU\/SL) observed the International Women\u2019s Day. This was carried out on the 8th<\/sup> March this year at No 53 Cartas Drive in Allen Town.<\/p>\n

In giving the declaration of purpose of International Women\u2019s Day, Abigail Mirian Kamanda, the Office and Outreach Director of Chavez International said the day presents the opportunity to look back and reflect on past struggles encountered by women and their achievement made.<\/p>\n

According to Madam Kamanda, the year 1975 was designated by the United Nations as International women\u2019s year, and explained that it was only this year that they began celebrating the 8th<\/sup> March as International Women\u2019s da.<\/p>\n

According to Kamanda,\u00a0 in adopting the resolution on the observance of the Women\u2019s Day the United Nations General Assembly cited two reasons to recognized the fact that securing peace and social progress and full employment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require active participation, equality and development of women.<\/p>\n

\u201c To acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of International peace and security the day\u2019s symbolism has a wider meaning indicating that it is an occasion to review how far they have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She further went on to explain that the year 2000 involved the twin policies on gender mainstreaming as well as the advancement of women in terms of development.<\/p>\n

Further to that, in 2007 the three Gender Acts were passed into law, and this act covers the Domestic Violence Act, as well as the\u00a0 Devolution of Estates Act and the Registration of Customary Marriage and Divorce Acts.<\/p>\n

In giving her speech on International Women\u2019s day Josephine Keita, Women and Environmental Affairs manager of Chavez International said the objectives of the International Women\u2019s Day is important because it is a day set aside by the International community to present opportunities in the advancement for the rights of women in the cultural socio-economic and political development. \u201cIt is to reaffirm women\u2019s solidarity in the struggle for peace and to show what women have achieved,\u201d she said, noting that, they in the Hugo Chavez International Foundation are celebrating their solidarity with women around the world in all countries.<\/p>\n

In his statement Chief Executive Director Alimamy Bakarr Sankoh said this year celebration comes at a time when the large majority Africans in Libya both women and men suffer the heavy consequences from military interventions from\u00a0 the North Atlantic Treaty organization.. The Ceremony concluded with a cultural and dance drama show.<\/p>\n
