Ten Students from Georgia Southern University, Georgia, United States of America were thoroughly briefed by home-based staff of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Washington DC February 23, 2012 about Sierra Leone\u2019s Foreign Policy relating to Regional and Sub-regional obligations, under the current leadership of President Ernest Bai Koroma. The visit is in consonance with the tenth (10th) Annual National Model African Union Conference to be held at Howard University Washington D C from February 23-26 2012.<\/p>\n

The model is essentially, a simulation of the proceedings of the African Union, designed to increase awareness of the functions and activities of the African Union as well as to highlight major military \u2013security \u2013political and economic issues in Africa. The ten students were drawn from the School of Political Science and were accompanied by a faculty advisor Dr. Saba Jalloh.<\/p>\n

They not only learnt\u00a0 about the Committee on Union Government, Technical\u00a0 Committee on Economic\u00a0 Matters, Technical Committee on Social, Peace and Security and Assembly of Heads of State and Government, they were also schooled through a Power-Point presentation by First Secretary Alan Logan – on the priorities of the Government of Sierra Leone\u00a0 which includes:\u00a0 Agriculture ( Food Self-Sufficiency), Health- Free Health Care program for under- fives (5) and lactating Mothers, Education-growth and expansion – establishment of new a University, Information & Communication \u2013 liberalizing the gate-way and the transfer from the current status to Fiber \u2013 optic.<\/p>\n

The presentation was followed by an interactive session about positive state of Sierra Leone\u2019s economy as recently highlighted by the World Bank.<\/p>\n

Other topics include \u201cthe state of relations between Sierra Leone, United Kingdom, United states of America, African Union (AU) Member States and other Multi – lateral Institutions.<\/p>\n

Welcoming the guests at the Embassy, Charged D\u2019 Affairs\u00a0 a I Counselor Sheku Mesali thanked officials of Howard University for making Sierra Leone one of their choices for such session.<\/p>\n

He said it is to the pleasure of the Ambassador, His Excellency Bockari Kortu Stevens that Sierra Leone is counted among the number of modeling Countries for the African Union.<\/p>\n

He said Sierra Leone is a founding member of the Organization of African Unity, now African Union and assured them of a fruitful deliberation.<\/p>\n

A Republic of Sierra Leone flag was presented to the Model President of Sierra Leone who is the leader of Sierra Leone\u2019s delegation to this year\u2019s conference.<\/p>\n
