{"id":32841,"date":"2011-11-30T05:33:48","date_gmt":"2011-11-30T05:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=32841"},"modified":"2011-11-30T05:33:48","modified_gmt":"2011-11-30T05:33:48","slug":"our-aspirations-are-great-minister-richard-konteh-tells-unido-conference-delegates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=32841","title":{"rendered":"\u201cOur aspirations are great\u201d\u2026 Minister Richard Konteh tells UNIDO Conference Delegates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">VIENNA, November 29, 2011 &#8211; Addressing Heads of States, senior government officials, representatives of many international organizations as well as officials from the European Union and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States and colleague ministers at UNIDO\u2019s fourteenth General Conference, Minister of Trade and Industry, Richard Konteh spoke about Sierra Leone\u2019s aspirations for meaningful inclusion in the new industrial revolution on behalf of His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma.\u00a0 (<em>Photo: Minister Konteh addressing UNIDO Conference Delegate<\/em>s)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking on the overarching theme of this year\u2019s conference \u201cThe new industrial revolution: making it sustainable\u201d \u2013 Minister Konteh reminded participants that even though he comes from one of the least industrialized nations in the world, Sierra Leone\u2019s aspirations for industrialization are as great as any other country. \u201cOur aspirations are great because we see the industrial revolution as the greatest opportunity for creating wealth, creating jobs and moving our people out of poverty\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32843\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Dr.-David-Tommy-Dr.-Patrick-Kormawa-UNIDO-Representatives-to-AU-ECA-and-Nigeria-respectively.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32843\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32843\" title=\"Dr. David Tommy &amp; Dr. Patrick Kormawa (UNIDO Representatives to AU, ECA and Nigeria respectively)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Dr.-David-Tommy-Dr.-Patrick-Kormawa-UNIDO-Representatives-to-AU-ECA-and-Nigeria-respectively.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. David Tommy &amp; Dr. Patrick Kormawa (UNIDO Representatives to AU, ECA and Nigeria respectively)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Underscoring the conference\u2019s agenda that inclusive and sustainable industrial development strategies are of critical importance especially in reconciling the environment, economic and social conditions, Minister Konteh noted that the Sierra Leone government has teamed up with neighboring Liberia to declare the Gola Forest a green belt to avoid exploitation of the forest\u00a0 and therefore save the environment from further degradation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32844\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Sierra-Leones-Ambassador-to-Germany-Jongopie-Stevens-and-UNIDO-DG-Kandeh-Yumkella.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32844\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32844\" title=\"Sierra Leone's Ambassador to Germany Jongopie Stevens and UNIDO DG Kandeh Yumkella\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Sierra-Leones-Ambassador-to-Germany-Jongopie-Stevens-and-UNIDO-DG-Kandeh-Yumkella.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sierra Leone&#39;s Ambassador to Germany Jongopie Stevens and UNIDO DG Kandeh Yumkella<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though the new industrial revolution poses constraints, Sierra Leone, he said, must seize with great zeal what the revolution promises. \u201cIt is as much a moral imperative as it is a good governance obligation to ride the industrial revolution train,\u201d he stated. \u201cWe cannot be left out; we should not be left out and we will not be left out,\u201c he emphasized.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like many Least Developed Countries (LDCs) around the world, Sierra Leone, must make industrial development an essential driver of sustainable development and poverty reduction. However, to fully realize the benefits associated with the new industrial revolution, immense deficits in the energy, transport and information sectors must be addressed.
