{"id":32660,"date":"2011-11-25T01:58:10","date_gmt":"2011-11-25T01:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=32660"},"modified":"2011-11-25T01:58:10","modified_gmt":"2011-11-25T01:58:10","slug":"youth-president-failure-to-address-youth-socio-economic-exclusion-could-jeopardise-development-in-sierra-leone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=32660","title":{"rendered":"Youth President: failure to address youth socio-economic exclusion could jeopardise development in Sierra Leone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President of Young Leaders-Sierra Leone, Unisa Dizo-Conteh Junior (in photo), has said that failure to address youth socio-economic exclusion could threaten sustainable development in Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYouth comprise approximately 60 percent of the country\u2019s population \u2013 yet, they face major exclusion in education, employment and political participation,\u201d said Dizo Junior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFailure to address these issues now could result to major problems to sustain development in Sierra Leone,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking at a symposium on \u201cYouth and Development in Sierra Leone,\u201d organised by The International Association of Sierra Leoneans Abroad (INASLA) in London on 18 November, the youth leader said the current education system was failing young people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cStudents today are poorly equipped compared to previous generations.\u201d\u00a0 Adding: \u201cSome graduates are coming out of universities poorly equipped in skills such as reading, writing and critical thinking,\u201d said Dizo Jnr.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSeventy percent of the youth are unemployed or underemployed,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThe employed youth are concentrated in informal sectors doing labour intensive work in the mines and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his response, the Sierra Leone High Commissioner to the UK and Northern Ireland H.E.
