One of Sierra Leone’s most talented young poets, Jusu Jaka Yawmah, shares with us a second piece of the wonderful poetry from his collection ‘Jay’s Anthology<\/a>.’<\/h2>\n

I woke up this morning from my sleep<\/em>
\n Thanking the Shepherd for the dearly keep<\/em>
\n And the tenacious care to His numerous flock of sheep.<\/em>
\n Faintly, I can hear the signatures; the cocks crow, the infants weep<\/em>
\n To tell all asunder, “It is dawn!” Above the skies, I can see the sun creep<\/em>
\n Slowly but surely, in due timing, like the proverbial turtle climbing a steep.<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But I did wake up with a word,<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 And that is to change the world.<\/em><\/p>\n

The sellers echoed, the birds chirped in the distance<\/em>
\n Amidst the noisy confusion, I ought to keep my balance<\/em>
\n And to uphold my purpose, I must buckle up endurance<\/em>
\n With a steady focus and pace, leaving nothing to chance.<\/em>
\n My task is time-bound, every second with its significance<\/em>
\n And the zest to conquer spews like a blazing furnace.<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Because I woke up with a word,<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Which is to change the world.<\/em><\/p>\n

The routine is quite unusual and demanding in every way<\/em>
\n The things I do clearly differ from those I did the previous day.<\/em>
\n But peace was certain, and emanating from the depths of the mind.<\/em>
\n In my dream, this peace was duly enjoyed by all; too hard to find;<\/em>
\n Dignity, tolerance, compassion, justice and equity all combined<\/em>
\n To give a lasting and amiable satisfaction to every human-kind.<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And so strong was this word,<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “We need to change the world”<\/em><\/p>\n

The Sun is passing, dwindling my chances, twilight is in full pursuit<\/em>
\n The obstacles are inherent but I must keep my eyes on the summit.<\/em>
\n My time, energy, strength, leisure I painstakingly submit<\/em>
\n To this lasting universal change, I kindheartedly commit.<\/em>
\n Though I strive, though I crave, though I willingly forfeit,<\/em>
\n I must keep my gaze fixed and never yield to defeat.<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So I must hold fast to my word,<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To bring this change to the world.<\/em><\/p>\n

The day is passing, I lose courage, twilight almost done!<\/em>
\n I slumped in total despair, thinking all hopes are gone…<\/em>
\n And suddenly, from within, deep within me… I can see!<\/em>
\n Yes! I’ve got it! My despair formed part of the raging sea,<\/em>
\n My focus, my vision, my resolve, my energy, they all possibly<\/em>
\n Gave beauty to my dream, and make it just what it seem to be.<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes! I can! I can change the world,<\/em>
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Meet my dreams and uphold my word.<\/em><\/p>\n

The change the world needs is inside, <\/em>
\n And together we can if we all decide.<\/em>
\n As such, you and I form the word, “we”. <\/em>
\n But first I know it must start inside of me.<\/em>
