The announcement was made on the eve of the 10<sup>th<\/sup> All-Africa Games, the continent\u2019s largest multi-sports tournament, under the patronage of Dr. Aires Aly Bonif\u00e1cio, Prime Minister of Mozambique.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u201cReducing the numbers of new HIV infections is nowhere more imperative or urgent than in Africa,\u201d said Mr Sidib\u00e9. \u201cThe All-Africa Games are a great occasion to raise wide awareness about intensifying efforts to reach UNAIDS\u2019 vision of Zero new infections, Zero discrimination, and Zero AIDS-related deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSport brings people together and is especially popular among young people. I urge all the participants and fans across Africa watching the All-Africa Games to learn the facts about HIV prevention and give AIDS the Red Card,\u201d said Mr Caetano.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among prominent personalities expected to attend the launch are former Mozambican President Joaquim Alberto Chissano, Gra\u00e7a Machel, wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela, and leading athletes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UNAIDS <em>Give AIDS the Red Card<\/em> campaign was introduced at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa with the support of 28 team captains. Captains of six teams at the 2011 FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup in Germany also endorsed the initiative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the Maputo event, the first Africa-wide launch of the initiative, the heads of national delegations to the Games, including presidents of National Olympic Committees and Ministers of Sport from 47 participating countries, are signing a pledge to support the <em>Give AIDS the Red Card campaign for Zero new infections, Zero discrimination, and Zero AIDS-related deaths. <\/em>The campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize action to strengthen the response to HIV and accelerate progress across Africa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBy signing the pledge, each delegation is agreeing to set up a national plan of action on the UNAIDS Give AIDS the Red Card in consultation with UNAIDS offices and national AIDS councils upon return in their respective countries,\u201d said Dr. Djibril Diallo, Senior Adviser to the UNAIDS Executive Director. \u201cThe 2012 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon will be the next platform for pan-African mobilization of the initiative,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mozambicans are welcoming 5,000 athletes who will compete in 23 sports during the Games, including: <a title=\"Athletics (sport)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Athletics_%28sport%29\" target=\"_blank\">athletics<\/a> (track and field events), <a title=\"Badminton\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Badminton\" target=\"_blank\">badminton<\/a>, <a title=\"Basketball\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basketball\" target=\"_blank\">basketball<\/a>, <a title=\"Boxing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boxing\" target=\"_blank\">boxing<\/a>, <a title=\"Canoeing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canoeing\" target=\"_blank\">canoeing<\/a>, <a title=\"Chess\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chess\" target=\"_blank\">chess<\/a>, <a title=\"Cycling\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cycling\" target=\"_blank\">cycling<\/a>, <a title=\"Association football\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Association_football\" target=\"_blank\">football<\/a>, <a title=\"Gymnastics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gymnastics\" target=\"_blank\">gymnastics<\/a>, <a title=\"Team handball\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Team_handball\" target=\"_blank\">handball<\/a>, <a title=\"Judo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judo\" target=\"_blank\">judo<\/a>, <a title=\"Karate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karate\" target=\"_blank\">karate<\/a>, <a title=\"Netball\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netball\" target=\"_blank\">netball<\/a>, <a title=\"Rowing (sport)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rowing_%28sport%29\" target=\"_blank\">rowing<\/a>, <a title=\"Yacht racing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yacht_racing\" target=\"_blank\">sailing<\/a>, <a title=\"Shooting sport\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shooting_sport\" target=\"_blank\">shooting<\/a>, <a title=\"Swimming (sport)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swimming_%28sport%29\" target=\"_blank\">swimming<\/a>, <a title=\"Table tennis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Table_tennis\" target=\"_blank\">table tennis<\/a>, <a title=\"Taekwondo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taekwondo\" target=\"_blank\">taekwondo<\/a>, <a title=\"Tennis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennis\" target=\"_blank\">tennis<\/a>, <a title=\"Triathlon\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triathlon\" target=\"_blank\">triathlon<\/a>, <a title=\"Volleyball\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volleyball\" target=\"_blank\">volleyball<\/a> and <a title=\"Olympic weightlifting\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olympic_weightlifting\" target=\"_blank\">weightlifting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the region most affected by HIV, with an estimated 22.5 million people living with the virus in the region representing 68% of the global total. However significant progress is being made in the region. In 22 countries, the HIV incidence rate declined by more than 25% between 2001 and 2009.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">World leaders meeting in New York at the 2011 UN High-Level Meeting on AIDS agreed on far-reaching targets to halve new infections through sexual transmission and drug use, eliminate new HIV infections among children, and reduce TB-related AIDS deaths by half\u2014all by 2015.
