{"id":25066,"date":"2011-06-15T09:00:40","date_gmt":"2011-06-15T13:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=25066"},"modified":"2011-06-15T09:00:40","modified_gmt":"2011-06-15T13:00:40","slug":"journalists-meet-deciding-when-to-name-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=25066","title":{"rendered":"Journalists Meet: Deciding when to name names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Normally, Journalists want to identify fully everyone who is mentioned in their stories.\u00a0\u00a0 Generalities are difficult, however, and editors make their decisions on a case-by-case basis.\u00a0 Certain types of stories present especially thorny problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rape Victims\u00a0&#8211; Most newspapers withhold the names of all rape victims.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Editors explain that there is a stigma attached to rape, and the victims\u2019 suffering such evil.\u00a0 Also, victims might be more reluctant to report rape to the police if they thought their names would be revealed to the public c- this is certainly true, class.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">People critical of newspapers\u2019 policy respond that newspapers have adopted a dual standard: that they identify the people charged with rape (usually men), but never their accusers.\u00a0 Critics add that the policy is an old-fashioned and paternalistic means of protecting women.\u00a0\u00a0 Increasingly, some victims want to be identified, because they want to discuss the crime openly and to help other victims.\u00a0 That, however, is usually a decision made by a victim, not an editor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Typically, most editors never printed the name of a 29-year-old jogger who was brutally beaten and gang-raped in New York City\u2019s Central Park in 1990.\u00a0 Newspapers throughout the United States reported only that the victim was an investment banker who had attended Wellesley and Yale.\u00a0\u00a0 Newspapers also described the woman\u2019s remarkable recovery and the fact that she returned to work after seven months of intensive rehabilitation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While withholding the victim\u2019s identity, newspapers repeatedly published the names and photographs of her alleged attackers, all of whom were black or Hispanic.\u00a0 One of the youths\u2019 lawyers complained: \u201cThe press is inconsistent. They protect the wishes of the jogger because of all she\u2019s been through. But they don\u2019t care at all about the consequences for my client. Who\u2019s been branded a gang-raper\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Look class, it is professionally true that people who are arrested do not have a right to privacy.\u00a0 It is justifiable not naming the names of women who are victims because they, however, are innocent. They were never accused of committing brutal crimes at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And don\u2019t you forget that all that we discussed in this class must be abided to &#8211; did you hear me class?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I will stop here so far.
