Fifty years ago, a beautiful wind of change swept across the West Coast of Africa and brought forth our independence
\nFifty years today, a great many still question its essence
\nAlas, as we continue to wallow in the shadows of our neighbours the world is yet to feel our presence<\/p>\n
Fifty years ago the British left our land
\nWhy we are still where we are I can\u2019t quite understand
\nFate, if I may conjecture, must have dealt us an unfair hand<\/p>\n
Fifty years ago all the talk was about prosperity
\nToday the battle is being lost to the enemy that is poverty
\nIn spite of years of unbridled turbulence, our beloved remains a land of astounding beauty<\/p>\n
As we celebrate five decades of relative unity and unfettered liberty
\nI dare say things do not look all that pretty<\/p>\n
The president has called for a change of attitude
\nTo that end, we also need to work on our ineptitude
\nFor the challenges we face require men and women of great aptitude<\/p>\n
To our children we have to leave a legacy
\nUnto them we must bequeath a nation firmly entrenched in democracy
\nVerily, the real obstacle to our development remains the scourge of illiteracy<\/p>\n
How we need a leader that can make us truly independent
\nThe story has been the same president after president
\nOur weary eyes yet gaze the distant road of memory in search of a good precedent<\/p>\n
Some left us independence
\nOthers remorselessly dragged us to the threshold of decadence
\nOthers still a semblance of good governance
\nLittle wonder why we have lost patience and confidence<\/p>\n
Where do we go from here?
\nHow do we get there?
\nFrom our leaders we wait to hear
\nThe price to pay for prosperity, they say, is never too dear<\/p>\n
What part are you going to play?
\nSome will fast and pray
\nOthers will work hard every day
\nI will do as our statutes say<\/p>\n
A decade from now Sierra Leone will be sixty
\nTo make this nation great is our scared duty
\nI pray we always remember this in the name of the Almighty
\nFor this nation deserves to be very mighty<\/p>\n
