He found, \u2018The crimes charged against many men now in the employ of the Peruvian Amazon Company are of the most atrocious kind, including murder, violation, and constant flogging\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Agents of the company rounded up dozens of Indian tribes in the western Amazon to collect wild rubber for the European and American markets. In a few short decades many of the tribes were completely wiped out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Much of the detail of this horrific episode has been forgotten, but for the descendants of the rubber boom survivors, the reality of the continuing \u2018rainforest harvest\u2019 is impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The uncontacted Indians seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/survival-international.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b14580b05b832fb959c4ee444&amp;id=214fb77ced&amp;e=b06f559d21\" target=\"_blank\">stunning new footage<\/a> last month are likely to be descended from rubber boom survivors, whilst nearby another \u2018rainforest harvest\u2019 is being played out on uncontacted tribes\u2019 land. <a href=\"http:\/\/survival-international.us1.list-manage2.com\/track\/click?u=b14580b05b832fb959c4ee444&amp;id=cd0f338123&amp;e=b06f559d21\" target=\"_blank\">Illegal loggers<\/a>, driven by the high value of endangered woods, are pushing further into their remote forest homes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">US conservation organization, <a href=\"http:\/\/survival-international.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b14580b05b832fb959c4ee444&amp;id=6fe373951b&amp;e=b06f559d21\" target=\"_blank\">Upper Amazon Conservancy<\/a>, documented illegal logging camps in areas inhabited by <a href=\"http:\/\/survival-international.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b14580b05b832fb959c4ee444&amp;id=722eb169ae&amp;e=b06f559d21\" target=\"_blank\">uncontacted Murunahua Indians<\/a> just six months ago. Yet, according to a statement by Peru\u2019s environment minister last week, the government has logging under almost 100% control. \u2018Each mahogany tree that is chopped down today is georeferenced and controlled\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">UAC spokesman Chris Fagan told Survival International, \u2018The minister\u2019s statement is 100% incorrect. The majority of mahogany continues to be <a href=\"http:\/\/survival-international.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b14580b05b832fb959c4ee444&amp;id=ab6be24997&amp;e=b06f559d21\" target=\"_blank\">cut from Peru&#8217;s protected areas or from indigenous lands illegally<\/a>, without adhering to proper management plans.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/survival-international.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b14580b05b832fb959c4ee444&amp;id=a22abfec96&amp;e=b06f559d21\" target=\"_blank\">Survival International<\/a>\u2019s Director, Stephen Corry, said today, \u2018Where there\u2019s money to be made from Amazonia, whether from cutting it down or taking its riches whilst leaving it standing, Indian tribes end up dead. That was the story a hundred years ago, and it\u2019s the story today. A century of human rights declarations and more and more elaborate schemes to save the forest, haven\u2019t made much difference; they won\u2019t until the Indians, whose land this is, are put at the centre of the debate.
