{"id":19821,"date":"2011-02-22T11:30:57","date_gmt":"2011-02-22T16:30:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sierraexpressmedia.com\/?p=19821"},"modified":"2011-02-22T11:30:57","modified_gmt":"2011-02-22T16:30:57","slug":"statement-issued-by-ecowas-public-information-unit-on-cote-divoire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sierraexpressmedia.net\/?p=19821","title":{"rendered":"Statement issued by ECOWAS Public Information Unit on Cote D\u2019Ivoire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The absence of the ECOWAS delegation on the African Union high-level panel mission to Cote D\u2019Ivoire &#8211; <\/strong>The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) wishes to clarify the non-participation of the West African delegation in the visit of the African Union High-Level Panel for the Resolution of the Crisis in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire to Abidjan, scheduled for 21<sup>st<\/sup> and 22<sup>nd<\/sup> February 2011.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The absence of His Excellency Blaise Compaor\u00e9, President of Burkina Faso and Facilitator of the Direct Inter-Ivorian Dialogue, and His Excellency James Victor Gbeho, President of the ECOWAS Commission, from the Delegation was due mainly to the security threat brought to the attention of the Panel in the evening of Sunday, 20<sup>th<\/sup> February 2011, while the latter was in consultation in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The threat was specifically directed at the person of the Facilitator reportedly by members of the \u201c<em>Jeunes Patriots\u201d <\/em>of C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire who had commenced demonstrations in the streets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Panel was relying on its ability to persuade one of the contestants in the disputed 28<sup>th<\/sup> November 2010 presidential run-off election to contain the mob action that had taken the character of invading the Houphouet Boigny International Airport in Abidjan and vowing not to vacate the installation until the mob was able to prevent the Facilitator from setting foot on Ivorian soil.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though the threat was serious enough to compel the Facilitator to cancel his planned participation in the trip to Abidjan, the ECOWAS Commission became concerned that the Panel nevertheless took the decision to go ahead immediately with the visit without the participation of an important member, whose invaluable contribution to the peace process in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire deserves better appreciation and respect.
