The Chairman Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS), Nigeria\u2019s President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has nominated Sierra Leone\u2019s President Ernest Bai Koroma to be among the list of other Sub – regional stake holders to address the United Nations Security Council in New York and the United States of America in Washington D. C. on the situation in the West African State of Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to nominate you as a member of the delegation to the United Nations and United States as soon as appointment can be set up in New York and Washington D.C respectively\u201d.<\/p>\n

The delegation which includes Mali\u2019s President Amadou Toumani Toure, Sierra Leone\u2019s President Ernest Bai Koroma, Nigeria\u2019s Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia, Nigeria\u2019s Ambassador to the United States Prof. Ade Adefuye and ECOWAS Director of Political Affairs Dr. Jonas Hemou will update ECOWAS partners, particularly the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, on the efforts made so far by ECOWAS and any further actions in the matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI consider this initiative very important in the partnership that we are enjoying with them since the United Nations Security Council will soon meet and ECOWAS will be required to provide the position and plans of ECOWAS on Ivory Coast,\u201d said President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.<\/p>\n

Following the adoption of the Communiqu\u00e9s at the two Extra ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, the ECOWAS Chairman, Nigeria\u2019s President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan dispatched a Mission to Cote d\u2019Ivoire to explore with the outgoing President Mr. Laurent Gbagbo and the President Elect Mr. Alassane Ouattara, the prospects of reaching a Pacific agreement on the manner in which power could be ceded to the duly elected President of Cote d\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n

The Mission was joined on its second visit on 3rd<\/sup> January 2011 by Prime Minister Raila Odinga of Kenya representing the African Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you may have already been informed, the mission was not successful because both sides continued to stick to their points of view. \u201cWhile waiting for an opportunity to resume further initiatives in this direction, I have thought it fit to update our partners, particularly the permanent members of the united nations security council on the efforts made so far by ECOWAS\u00a0 and any further actions in the matter\u201d, said Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.<\/p>\n

Two other delegations will also visit France and the United Kingdom, and China, India and Russia respectively.<\/p>\n

According to ECOWAS Communications Department, the short notice entailed in the request is a direct consequence resulting\u00a0 from the fast pace in which things are moving in Cote d\u2019Ivoire: and there is very little time available to all of us in the discharge of our responsibilities towards the country.<\/p>\n

The Minister\/ Counselor at the Sierra Leone High Commission in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Mr. Duwai Lungay confirmed the report from ECOWAS and said \u201cwe received the official letter from the Chairman of the\u00a0ECOWAS\u00a0Commission. It has been transmitted to Foreign Office in Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n
