General Motor and Transport Workers\u2019 Union in Freetown has commended Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Morie Lengor for improving the erratic traffic system in the Western Area since he took up office few months ago.<\/p>\n
Police confirmed earlier claims of confrontations between its members and some drivers and conductors of the country\u2019s transport cooperation, SLRTC.<\/p>\n
Complaints were that some drivers have taken the law into their own hands by flouting traffic rules and challenging police orders.<\/p>\n
A Freetown resident said: \u201cThey park and pick up passengers along road sides, thereby causing a hell of traffic congestion. That is lawlessness. Often the rush for taxi cabs has led to rampant theft of innocent passengers and pedestrians.\u201d<\/p>\n
Idriss Y. Bangura, aka Couple, a senior drivers\u2019 union member, admitted that there were problems. He, however, commended the police boss, stating that it has always been his main concern.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is an eye-sore to investors, presidential convoy and well meaning visitors,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
President of the union, Alhaji Fofanah, himself an active driver, said he has always worked closely with traffic police officers but pointed out that SLRTC\u2019s persistent problems with the police was not good for their relationship.<\/p>\n
Recently, the AIG\u2019s office, supported by local unit commander, east Nepor Senesie and divisional traffic officer, Inspector Jimmy, reviewed the system and restored sanity in the relationship that was already fraught with complaints.<\/p>\n
One of the results of that tireless effort by \u2018Couple\u2019 and the office of the AIG, according to businessmen and women who trade along major streets in Freetown, was the free flow of traffic and organized business atmosphere.<\/p>\n
